Scarification: Dried lotus seeds have a hard outer shell that prevents water from reaching the inner embryo. You'll need to help the seed germinate by carefully scratching or filing away a tiny portion of the hard shell to expose the white interior. Be cautious not to damage the embryo itself.Germination:Soaking: Place the scarified seeds in a container of warm (around 75-80°F) water. Use filtered or dechlorinated tap water. The seeds should soak for several days, up to a week, until they swell and the hard shell softens slightly. Planting:Choose a Container: You can use a pot, bucket, or even a bowl for germination. Just ensure it's watertight and at least a few inches deep.Planting Medium: There are two options:Soil: Fill the container with a few inches of well-draining soil mix. Add a layer of sand or gravel on top. Gently press the seed into the soil with the pointed end facing upwards. Don't bury it completely - the pointed end should be slightly exposed.Water Only: Alternatively, you can simply plant the seed directly in a container filled with warm water. No soil is needed here.
