Ever since, he has been living a life that suffered the wrath of poverty. He lived in a workhouse with other orphans who would be beaten and poorly fed. One day, he gathered the courage to ask Mr. Bumble, the beadle, for an extra serving of food. “Please, sir, I want some more” is all he said. Mr. Bumble was outraged and sent Oliver out of the workhouse. The boy believes that better fortune will befall him if he goes to London and flees from his current town. Here, he meets Artful Dodger who handles a gang of pickpockets. Unaware of what the gang does for a living, Oliver joins them and is soon trained to be a pickpocket. One day, a man he pickpockets takes pity on Oliver and he is kept under the care of a philanthropist gentleman. Bill Sikes and Nancy, members of the pickpocket gang, find him and take him back. They send Oliver out on a job, but this time, in the company of Sikes. During the job, Oliver is shot and Sikes flees.
