Oliver Twist is the story of a young, downtrodden orphan who, upon being left under the care of an undertaker, flees to London. Here, he meets the Artful Dodger and this is where his new adventures begins. Summary of the Book Living a life that suffered the wrath of poverty, Oliver Twist was a young boy who was orphaned almost as soon as he was born when his mother died soon after his birth. Like all the other orphans in the workhouse, he was often beaten and hardly fed. One day, he gathered the courage to go up to Mr. Bumble for an extra serving of food. He said, “Please, sir, I want some more”. This caused major trouble for him and he is sent out of the workhouse where he used to stay. He believes that better fortune would befall him if he goes to London, and therefore flees from his current town. Here, he meets Artful Dodger who handles a gang of pickpockets. He is unaware of what these people do for a living, and is taken in and trained as a pickpocket. Oliver is shown an act of kindness by a person that he pickpockets and is taken under the care of a philanthropist gentleman. Just when he thinks that things are going well for him, he is taken back into the gang by two of the gang members: Bill Sikes and Nancy. This time, they send him out on a job, but in the company of Sikes. During the job, Oliver is shot and Sikes flees. He is lucky enough as the Maylies family takes him in and looks after him even though they know that he was actually robbing their place when he got shot. However, even this happiness is intruded by the leader of the pickpocket gang. Will Oliver ever find some peace, and will good fortune ever come to him?
