On The Road is a part-travelogue and part-memoir novel by Jack Kerouac relating his journey across America with his friends. Summary of the Book When Sal Paradise’s life is turned around with his divorce, he is disheartened with life. At this period, he encounters Dean Moriarty. Moriarty is a free-spirited man, full of a sense of adventure. He becomes a catalyst for Sal’s own change into a wanderer who learns to live life to the fullest. Sal travels to Denver and joins Carlo Marx, Moriarty and their friends for a short time full of parties. He then travels to San Francisco, where he meets Remi Boncoeur and his girlfriend Lee Ann. Covering the years from 1947 to 1950, this novel describes John Kerouac’s own travels across North America, and is a unique portrait of the postwar Beat and Counterculture generations. About John Kerouac Jean-Louis Lebris de Kérouac, better known as John Kerouac, was an American novelist and poet. Among his other works are The Town and the City, Doctor Sax, The Dharma Bums, Mexico City Blues, The Subterraneans, Desolation Angels, Visions of Cody, The Sea is My Brother and Big Sur. On The Road was adapted into a film starring Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart and Amy Adams. The film was directed by Walter Salles.
