One Amazing Thing is a novel written by the Indian author, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. It is the story of people from different backgrounds coming together due to a common bond of enduring a tormenting experience of a disaster. Summary of the Book 9 people from different backgrounds are trapped in the visa office at an Indian Consulate after a massive earthquake leaves an American city in chaos. There is a Chinese-Indian woman with her gifted teenage granddaughter, two visa officers who are almost on the verge of an affair, an ex-soldier, a young Muslim man angry with the new America, an Indian-American girl, and a bitter elderly white couple. They realize that there is pretty much nothing they can do but wait for some help, and start to ration out the little food and water they had and try hard to make it last as long as they can. When they all start sharing their stories, waiting to be rescued or to die, everyone tries to recollect one amazing thing from their life. Some of them even eke out stories that they had never shared before. This novel is an incredible tale of what it means to be human. About Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an Indian author and poet. She was born in Kolkata and moved to the United States for her graduation. She is an award-winning writer who has penned books like: The Conch Bearer, The Mistress of Spices, The Mirror of Fire and Dreaming, and Victory Song. Her books have been translated into several other languages, including Dutch, Japanese and Hebrew. Some of them have been adapted into movies.
