Open City, published in 2011, is an interesting novel which draws the reader into the narration of a young Nigerian doctor who loses contact with his family, ends his relationship, and strolls by himself aimlessly around the streets of New York. As he wanders, he tells stories of himself, about the random characters he comes across and about the city and its streets. Throughout the novel, a curb of queerness keeps breaking through. The narrator’s silence at certain instances speaks as loudly as his words with his flawless prose. This book is a wonderful portrayal of the New York City. Teju Cole is a Nigerian-American writer born on June 27th, 1975, in the United States. Apart from being a writer, he is also a photographer and an art-historian. He currently lives in Brooklyn working on his other book, Small Fates. His debut novel, Open City, has been praised as one of the best novels of 2011.
