This book is about a black prince, who has been forced to be a slave, and his wife, Imoinda, who faces much trouble because of her beauty. Summary of the Book Prince Oroonoko is the grandson of an African king. He is in love with Imoinda, the beautiful daughter of a top general. However, his grandfather falls in love with her too and is jealous of his grandson. He decides to make Imoinda one of his wives by force, knowing that she is married to Oroonoko. When Oroonoko and Imoinda try to escape, they are found and Imoinda is sold as a slave. Ashamed, the king lies to his grandson that Imoinda has been executed. Later, Oroonoko is captured and sold as a slave. He is sent to Surinam where he reunites with Imoinda, who was also sent there as a slave. Oroonoko asks for permission for both of them to return to their home, but their requests are ignored. He starts a slave revolt, but when he surrenders, many slaves are beaten and whipped. He needs to take revenge, but is sure that Imoinda will be targeted later. Oroonoko ends up making a decision that will bring about his downfall. About Aphra Behn Aphra Behn was a dramatist of the English Restoration and one of the first English professional female writers. Very little is known about her life except for her work as a writer and as a spy for the British crown.
