Senator Brabantio’s daughter Desdemona is about to have a secret marriage with Othello, a Moorish general. The rich gentleman Roderigo is upset with this news as he wanted to marry Desdemona himself. He complains to high-ranking soldier Iago for not informing him of this news. Meanwhile, Iago himself is dissatisfied with Othello, as he believes that Othello had an affair with his wife Emilia, and for promoting young Michael Cassio above him. Roderigo is advised by Iago to inform Brabantio about his daughter’s plans. Brabantio manages to reach Othello and accuses him of seducing his daughter through the use of witchcraft. Facing an assembly consisting of Brabantio’s kinsmen, various senators and the Duke of Venice, Othello defends himself successfully, explaining to all that it was the stories of his dangerous military life that drew Desdemona towards him. Brabantio leaves, warning Othello of Desdemona’s betrayal. Following this, Othello is sent to Cyprus to take charge of the Venetian Army to fight off the Turks. Othello arrives in Cyprus to hear that the Turkish fleet has been destroyed in the sea, thanks to a storm. In the celebration that follows, Iago conspires and gets Cassio drunk, which ends up in a huge disturbance. The disturbance is quelled by Othello, who accuses Cassio of being responsible for the disturbance, and strips his rank from him. Iago advises Cassio to persuade Desdemona in acting as the intermediary between him and Othello, in order to reinstate him. What follows is a tale of tragedy, where Iago, through his cunning, turns Othello against his own wife. Othello kills her, but is made aware Desdemona’s innocence later. The tragic tale ends with Othello committing suicide. Othello has been adapted for numerous films, operas and ballets. The most notable among the films are the 1952 movie The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice and the 1995 movie Othello.
