Cleft can be defined as a breach in the continuity of palate or lip. Cleft lip and palate are common congenital deformities in the oromaxillary area. This birth defect causes several functional and esthetic problems because of defects in the soft and hard tissues leading to nose deviation and formation of scar tissue after the surgery. The primary aim of the treatment should satisfy a few important requirements, speech being the foremost, while the second most important need is that of esthetics. Failure of social acceptance due to appearance or unintelligible speech is frequently manifested in psychic trauma. Therefore a general objective of treatment should be to provide the cleft patient the means to properly communicate through the speech mechanism and possess a normal face.
