This book aims to present a succinct overview of the most important aspects of managing children with cancer. In contrast to the major American texts which present a treatment philosophy based on the CCG or POG protocols, this volume has a predominantly European slant. The chapters on individual diseases contain details of clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, new imaging techniques and current management with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. The overall aim is not to present treatment methods in a didactic fashion, but rather to discuss the pros and cons of different therapeutic philosophies. There is a chapter on pathology which, in addition to summarizing the traditional pathological features of tumours occurring in childhood, considers in detail the application of modern techniques such as electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry and molecular biology. Similarly, there are chapters on innovative treatment approaches such as megatherapy with marrow rescue, tumour targetting and immunotherapy.Furthermore, the important subject of avoiding, detecting and managing late sequelae is covered, together with issues such as cancer-suffering children in the community and care of the dying child. Sections are also included which present controversies as they relate to diagnosis and management, with references to contemporary work relevant to each controversy. The book is aimed at practising paediatric oncologists seeking an overview of European and North American therapeutic strategies discussed in an objective manner. It should also appeal to general paediatricians, particularly those involved in shared care of children with cancer, who may require an accessible summary of clinical features and modern management. For this latter group, some useful tables are included as an appendix.
