Parenting: The Art And Science Of Nurturing aims to provide answers to the innumerable questions that inevitably arise when raising a baby. Summary Of The Book Prior to writing Parenting: The Art And Science Of Nurturing, the authors hosted a show on WorldSpace satellite radio in the Moksha channel. The show was called The Parenting Show, and each of the 16 episodes focused on a different aspect of parenthood. As the authors put in such a large amount of research and experience into the work, they thought it would be advantageous to compile it into a medium where it reached a wider audience, thus planting the seed for the idea of the book. The book is arranged in no certain order of the child’s development, beginning with Early Stimulation concluding with Sexuality Education. The book is written in a no frill format, simply stating the problem and the ways to deal with it, interspersed generously with case studies and wise quotes. It is also written in an easy-to-read point format. The end of each chapter contains the author’s personal view on the section. The contents are neatly ordered in each chapter, beginning with a quote, then explaining the issue, causes, early signs and the case study. The second chapter is about the developmental issues of a child, and tackles autism. The case study in this section speaks of a boy afflicted with the condition. It took a long time to diagnose him as his eye contact was fine and even an online test gave a negative result at first glance. After the case study, the chapter explains the next steps that could be taken by the parents to accept the condition and assist the child in integrating better with the society. The book also talks about other aspects of parenting like self esteem, discipline, grief, value education, and adoption. The main goal of Parenting: The Art And Science Of Nurturing is to create public awareness, so that when someone does encounter children with undiagnosed developmental issues, it will help prevent potential complications and even help arrest the issue completely, to reduce the effects at an early age. The book has been praised for its efforts and its usefulness as a tool for those who wish to provide better learning and growth for kids. About The Authors Shekhar Seshadri works in the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore where he is a Professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
