Written way back in the 1970’s, Pedagogy Of The Oppressed 2nd Edition was touted as a foundation for foray into critical pedagogy. In this text, Paulo Freire as an educator investigated into the link between education to society and therein he raised a number of concerns that hold relevance even today. Freire staunchly mediates that education should always keep in mind the importance of awareness of the incompleteness of people in general. Education in this ‘authentic’ approach should mould the student to strive towards completing themselves. Pedagogy Of The Oppressed 2nd Edition draws out the instruments that can help the oppressed in taking back control without pursuing any negative avenues. Freire advocates the use of cooperation, cultural synthesis and organizational unity to peruse the objective of freedom. Pedagogy Of The Oppressed 2nd Edition was considered an incendiary text since it brought to the forefront the dehumanizing effect of traditional education. The text proposed novel methods and conscientization of the education system. The word conscientization was in fact coined by Freire in this very book. The second edition engaged a parallel movement uniting inclusive language to liberation. An education bestseller, Pedagogy Of The Oppressed 2nd Edition has sold over 750,000 copies over the world. It is also a standard text in philosophy of education courses across America.
