This book is a record of a journey that the author embarked on in 1836, starting from the Panjab to Kabul. This time was of great ferment with the British, Dost Mohammad, and Ranjit Singh, all were trying to play each other to gain further influence in that region. Though his journey was but 3 years after the one by Alexander Burns, the political climate had changed considerably by then. Crossing the plains of the Panjab, the territory of Waziristan, and the plains of the Suleiman Kul, he reached Ghazni, and thence proceeded to Kabul via Killah and Maidan. All along the way he kept notes of all that he saw, heard, and experienced. In the book the reader will find descriptions of the lay of the land and the geography; snippets of the local history; observations of the principal trade routes; the habits, customs, and rituals of the people; the descriptions of the courts, political intrigues, and skirmishes, etc. This book is a reprint of the 1840 edition and has a route map, and 19 illustrations.
