Persuasion was the last novel written by Jane Austen. It was published after her death. It tells the story of Anne Elliot, a young woman who tried to rectify the mistakes she made at an immature age. Summary Of The Book Persuasion begins by introducing the Elliot family of Kellynch Hall, a titled family with waning fortunes. Sir Walter Elliot is a widower with three daughters. Mary, the youngest, is married, but Elizabeth and Anne are still single. Sir Walter has an exalted sense of his position and importance, and spends lavishly, getting into heavy debt to maintain his lifestyle. At last, he is forced to rent the family mansion, Kellynch Hall, and move to a humbler abode in Bath. When Anne discovers that the tenants who have rented the Hall are Admiral and Mrs. Croft, she is delighted. For Mrs. Croft is the sister of the man she was once engaged to, whom she still loves. Eight years ago, Anne had been engaged to an officer in the navy. They were very much in love. But, Anne was very young and unsure of herself. Persuaded by her older friend Lady Russell, she broke off her engagement. Her father and sister welcomed this move as they believed Frederick Wentworth was below their status in society, with no prospects. Now, so many years later, his sister has come to live at the Elliot Family home. Anne hopes she can win back the affection of the man she once rejected, a decision she has been regretting ever since. Even her father is now willing to accept Wentworth as a son-in-law, for he is now a Captain, and has also become a man of means. But Captain Wentworth has not forgotten or forgiven Anne for her treatment of him. He makes it clear that he would choose any woman but Anne for his wife. Anne once let other people’s persuasion affect her judgement and her life. Now, she is determined that she will not let it happen again. Meanwhile, Anne’s once estranged cousin, William Elliot, comes back into the family fold and begins to express a romantic interest in Anne.
