Summary of the Book Cassie Barrett wakes up one day, unable to recall anything that has happened in her life. Turns out, she is suffering from total amnesia. She is taken to a hospital and kept there till her husband, Alex, comes to get her. Alex is a Hollywood celebrity and an abusive husband. When Cassie gets back home, she is made to believe that her life is picture perfect. However, she starts to recall things and remembers that she had left to protect her baby. She goes to live on the Lakota reservation and loves her life there. In the meantime, Alex’s world is falling apart as he is unable to live without Cassie, and his reputation is going downhill since Cassie left. On the career front, however, he has won three Oscars. On the night of the Oscars, he receives a call from Cassie congratulating him on his achievement. He convinces her to come back and that things will be great. She agrees on the condition that he sees a therapist and Alex agrees. This is only temporary as Alex stops attending the sessions and becomes abusive again.
