Pita ke Patra is a collection of thirty letters written by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to a 10-year-old Indira Gandhi in 1928. Summary of the Book This book is an anthology of letters which were originally written in English when Nehru was in Allahabad and Indira in Mussoorie. In order to compensate for his prolonged absence, Nehru wrote these letters to impart wisdom and knowledge to his daughter. He wanted to make his daughter completely aware of her circumstances and her environment. Nehru's intention was to nurture Indira's young and impressionable mind with an unprejudiced and unbiased overview of history and the current state of affairs. In these letters, Nehru writes about a variety of topics, ranging from natural history, evolution to religion. He educates her about the different communities and races in the world and how these races were formed and why people look different. He discusses the ancient civilizations, the great cities of ancient times, the origin of language and religion, and various modifications in religion and its current manifestations. He extensively writes about the history of India, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Through these letters, Nehru wished for his daughter to have an empathetic view towards the world, its conflicts and woes. The letters show Nehru's love history and civilization and also show his overpowering desire to cultivate the same in his daughter. These letters contain invaluable guidance, advice and information given by a loving father to his daughter.
