About the Author Jawaid A.Khan PhD MSc obtained his MSc in botany with specialization in plant pathology from the Aligarh Muslim Universi. Aligarh India. He was awarded a PhD degree in plant virology from ttieWageningen Agricultural University Wageningen The Netherlands. He carried out research on potyviruses of beans for his PhD thesis. During this period he described a novel type of interference phenomenon and proposed the taxonomic status of bean common mosaic virus and black eye cowpea mosaic virus isolates. Dr. Khan has a number of research papers to his credit. His research interests include the molecular characterization of geminiviruses and potyviruses infecting ornamental horticultural and other economically important crops and the development of virus detection systems. He is a plant virologist at the National Botanical Research Institute Lucknow (an organization of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Government of India). Jeanne Dijkstra PhD MSc obtained her MSc in biology and her PhD in plant virology from the University of Amsterdam. From 1957 to 1995 she was employed as a plant virologist at the Department of Virology Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands where she carried out investigations on early events in the infection process interference between viruses in a plant and identification and taxonomy of plant viruses. In that period she taught virology to undergraduate and postgraduate students in virology plant pathology crop protection plant breeding and horticultural and tropical crop science. In addition to producing a number of scientific papers she is a co-editor of the book Viruses of Plants and the author of Practical Plant Virology: Protocols and Exercises.
