Chekhov first attained celebrity status as a playwright with The Seagull (1895), first produced in Petersburg, but subsequently brilliantly directed by Stanislavsky for the Moscow Art Theater. Uncle Vanya (1900), Three Sisters (1901), and the most famous of Chekhov’s plays, The Cherry Orchard (1904), followed in quick succession. All four plays are included in this volume.
