Kandinsky provides a thorough explanation of the fundamental dynamics of non-objective painting in Point and Line to Plane, one of the most important books on 20th-century art. He develops the notion of point as the "proto-element" of painting, the function of point in nature, music, and other forms of art, as well as the relationship between point and line that produces a special visual language by relying on his own distinctive terminology. He then moves on to an interesting examination of line, including its relationship to force, its lyrical and dramatic properties, and how different events might be expressed linearly.
