Portnoy’s Complaint is an outrageously funny book about sex, written by Philip Roth. Summary of the Book Portnoy’s Complaint is a monologue, as narrated by Alexander Portnoy to his psychoanalyst. The humorous monologue of the speaker is his confession to the psychoanalyst about his lust-ridden state of being. The book had created a storm of controversy due to its vivid and open depiction of sexuality, especially the detailed descriptions of masturbation using different props. Many of the characteristics in this book went on to become the trademarks of Roth’s writing. About Philip Roth Philip Roth is an American author. He has been honoured with the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award among others. He also received the inaugural Franz Kafka Prize in 2001.
