He was born as Dhanpat Rai Srivastav, and wrote under the pen name Nawab Rai. He eventually switched to Munshi Premchand with Munshi being an honorary prefix. He was a novel writer, honorary writer and dramatist who had been referred to as the Upanyas Samrat, meaning Emperor among Novelists, by some of the Hindi writers. Among his works are a dozen novels, about 250 short stories, many essays and translations of foreign literary works into Hindi.
