Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, first published in 1813, is one of the classics of English literature. It follows the life of a young girl named Elizabeth Bennet and is set in the early part of the nineteenth century in England. Summary of The Book Pride And Prejudice is the story of Elizabeth Bennet, who was born into a family of five daughters. It depicts her life through various stages such as adolescence, marriage, and beyond, reflecting the lives of people in England and the state of the English society of the nineteenth century. The book is spread over 61 chapters and its title is said to have been inspired by the 1782 novel Cecilia, which features the term in one of its passages. It has managed to retain the interest of the British literary circle for the impact it has made on several generations. Two movies have been made based on this novel. The themes explored include marriage, class, money, and learning. The style of writing is narrative and is in the third person. In essence, this classic is a social comedy bordering on satire. The lead character, Elizabeth Bennet, is witty, charming, lively, and most of all, strong. The interaction between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, the male lead of the story, is one of the highlights of the book. Their volatile relationship takes the center stage in the storyline. Pride and Prejudice has sold as many as 20 million copies. On the occasion of its 200th anniversary in 2013, two celebratory monographs namely Celebrating Pride And Prejudice: 200 Years Of Jane Austen’s Masterpiece and Celebrating Pride And Prejudice: 200 Years Of Jane Austen’s Darling Child were released. About Jane Austen Jane Austen is an English author of the early nineteenth century and is considered one of the most widely read authors of all time. Her first book was Sense And Sensibility. Some of her other famous books include Emma, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park. She usually wrote in the third person, often commenting on the social situation of England. Austen found social relevance in commonplace conversations and carried them forward to make statements that represented the society of her time and place. Among her most repeated themes is that of how a woman was dependent on marriage for a livelihood back then. Austen was born in the year 1775 in Steventon Rectory, England. She was home-schooled at first and later sent to boarding school. Austen had six brothers and a sister. She died on the 18th of July, 1817, aged forty-one. She left behind a legacy of work that played an active role in transforming the society.
