Time and again Goa has been touted as one of the States having a high literacy rate. What could be the cause or causes of this? One of the reasons that has of late aroused the curiosity of many people not only locally but also globally is the system of education during the Portuguese rule in Goa. This book on Primary Education is only a small attempt on my part to help those interested in satiating this growing curiosity. Since most of the available date-data pertaining to administration, curriculum, textbooks, methods, etc. is in the Portuguese language which to the present generation is a bit difficult to understand the book tries to present as much data as possible on Primary Education in Goa during the colonial period so that students, readers and even scholars can easily access them. The book is also an attempt to show in good light all those who contributed in one way or the other to the development and growth of Primary Education in Goa in spite of the fact that it happened to be in the language of the colonial masters.
