The scope of practice of pulmonary medicine has been on the increase, with newer areas like sleep medicine gaining importance and the widening diagnostic armamentarium. Therefore the popularity of this speciality has soared. Despite the technological advances, the importance of good clinical skills has not diminished. The university examination has also remained unchanged, despite changing times and a lot of facts are expected to be at the fingertips of exam going students. Unfortunately there are not many study aids on clinical skills for these students, as they get ready to face the arduous practical examination. ‘Survival Guide in Pulmonary Medicine’ is the answer for many a student’s prayer for a comprehensive guide. It gives me a sense of pride to acknowledge the good work done by the author Dr Akhil Paul, a student of mine. It is clear that he has carefully put it together the notes, as he himself prepared to take the final year MD examination, and the book gives glimpses of his clear insight. It has been ably edited by Dr T Balamugesh, who is a brilliant clinician. Overall, this book is handy and informative, and I believe every postgraduate and even undergraduates should grab a copy. I am confident that this will fulfill an important need and would become a popular handbook. Dr D J Christopher
