Rabindranath Tagore: An Interpretation is an intellectual and interactive biography of one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century and has been written by Sabyasachi Bhattacharya. He places the genius, his life, and his works in the history of his times and sheds light on the creative evolution of Tagore covering a time span of 80 years. The author has designed this biographical book with an aim to provide an interrelationship of the inner and outer life of Tagore. He talks about Tagore’s role in the Indian struggle for independence and his role in the transitional phase of Victorian stability to the chaos of World War II. This biography is considered to be first of its kind because the author does not provide the mundane details of Tagore’s life, though his struggle to change the world around him has been discussed. Besides providing the life details of the legendary figure, Bhattacharya aims to explore the intellectual evolution of his work.   Bhattacharya has made use of Tagore’s autobiographical accounts, his literary works, and his letters to furnish this biography. Divided into six chapters, the book crafts the portrait of the man who built on the heritage of the nineteenth century Indian renaissance. This biography describes Tagore as a man who used to give importance to self-criticism, was affected by the conflicts of his ‘inner life’, and was intensely skeptical. He knew the importance of the historical value of his times and was always in contact with his friends as well as adversaries. And, because of his invaluable virtues he became one of the most significant creators of the modern Indian mind. One of the salient features of this book is that it presents a timeline comparison of events of Tagore's public and private life. It relates the story of the solitary poet who also had an active public life. He was against ‘Western’ schooling since childhood and suffered from continual loneliness in his personal life. Later, he became the leader of the Swadeshi movement, renounced his knighthood after Jallianwala Bagh, laid down the foundation of Santiniketan (school), reinvented his creative self, and showcased his belief in a transnational humanist universalism. Sabyasachi Bhattacharya retired from the post of professor of History at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Previous to that, he had worked as Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi and Vice-Chancellor of Visva Bharati, Santiniketan.
