A polymath, he had expertise in geology, mining, chemistry, agriculture, and astronomy, and was also versed in Greek, Latin, and Vedic philology. He authored *The Riks or Primeval Gleams of Light and Life*. He was father of renowned Kannada poet T. P. Kailasam and brother of jurist T. Sadasiva Iyer.
