Being an account by the Chinese monk Fa-Hien of his travels in India and Ceylon (A.D. 399-414) in search of the Buddhist books of discipline. Translated and annotated this book follows the journey for the famous Chinese monk Fa-Hian from China to India and back again to China via Ceylon and the South East Asian Islands. Each place he visited in India and Ceylon was attached in some way to the life of Buddha and these anecdotes are related in the book. It is a book of travel and the author has not dwelt in detail on any location. Among the places visited by the monk are Khotan, Skardu, Crossings of the Indus, Udyana, Gandhara, Takshashila, Peshawar, Nagara, Mathura, Kosala, Kapilavastu, Vaishali, Rejagriha, Gaya, Patna and Ceylon. The book is illustrated with a drawings. This book is a reprint of the 1886 edition.an recension of the Chinese text.
