Originally published in 1899, Resurrection is a blunt exposition of prejudices of the man-made judicial system, aristocracy, social injustice, and the double standards of the institutionalized church. It presents a panoramic view of Russia’s society during the late nineteenth century. Besides being a sharp criticism on the government, Resurrection also explores the author’s personal belief in spiritual development and human redemption. Resurrection is the last novel written by Tolstoy and the last major fictional work published during his lifetime.
