This book is a collection of papers aims to explore how villages in India have been invaded by forces to break their isolation from national as well as international domain, in the process of making them homogeneous. People settled in the villages are being observed to become more receptive to modernization by ways of thought and work environment. The image of village republics has effectively been erased. The people in the villages are equally willing to be a part of Darwinism to achieve the commanding height in the society as their urban counterparts do. The book shows that the Indian village is caught in the whirlpool of change whose substance and direction are yet to be clear. The book explores how villages in India are faring under the pressure of change. This necessity has provided the stimulus for exposing the village as it comes up with the phenomenon of change for a better understanding of what is becoming and in which direction it is moving. The book is not based on the belief that this scrutiny will yield a particular confirmed scenario of the impact of the processes of change on the village. This scenario will continue to remain evading as long as the village remains caught up in the process of change.
