Romeo and Juliet is a play, one of the most famous romance stories known today, by William Shakespeare. Summary of the Book Despite their families’ differences, a young couple fall head over heels for each other. Juliet meets Romeo at a ball hosted by her family, the Capulets. Romeo is discovered, for as one of the Montagues, he hasn’t been invited to the ball. He sneaks out of the house, only to return after the ball to Juliet’s balcony to serenade her with his proposition of love. They decide to get married, seeking the help of Friar Laurence. The Friar helps them, hoping to reconcile their families with their marriage. However, the situation turns nasty when Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, challenges Romeo to a duel. Tybalt dies in the exchange, and the relationship of the families dwindles even further. The Friar’s plan of preventing Juliet’s marriage to the Count Paris results in a disastrous end, sealing the fates of the two lovers for all eternity. This is one of Shakespeare’s most tragic and most famous plays. About William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was an English playwright and poet. Popularly called “The Bard of Avon”, he is largely considered one of the greatest writers in English history. Among his most famous plays are Macbeth, Julius Caesar, King Lear and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Romeo and Juliet has been adapted numerous times on the silver screen, most notably by George Cukor in his 1936 film which was nominated for several Oscars, by Franco Zeffirelli in 1968 and by Baz Luhrmann in 1996.
