Arden Shakespeare presents the greatest love story ever written, the Bard of Avon’s most famous play, Romeo and Juliet. Summary of the Book The Capulets and the Montagues are plagued by their incessant rivalries and family feud. The two families can never seem to get along, but the petty squabbles of men have no say in the direction in which Cupid aims his arrows. Romeo Montague sneaks into a ball hosted by the Capulets and spots their young daughter, Juliet. He is discovered and forced out of the hall, but he is besotted with Juliet, having fallen for her at the very first glance. He later sneaks into the Capulets’ garden and calls out to Juliet. He serenades her in the glow of the moonlight and Juliet is smitten by him. Together, they decide to elope, and approach the Friar Laurence for help. The Friar hopes their union will end the feud, and he decides to help them. However, when Juliet’s cousin challenges Romeo to a duel, the events that follow will seal the fates of Romeo and Juliet once and for all. About William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and writer. Best remembered for his plays, he is called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". Shakespeare's plays have been adapted into several movies, and they are enacted in theatres around the world even to this day, centuries after his death. His works came to the spotlight in the Nineteenth century and he was idolized by the Romantics. A prolific writer and poet, he is also known for his poems, mainly the Sonnets.
