The story follows Rufus "Rough and Ready" Rushton, a young boy living in New York City who earns his living as a newsboy. Rufus, or "Rough," as he is commonly known, is an honest and hardworking lad, despite the challenges of growing up in the harsh environment of the city streets.Rough is the main provider for his family, which includes his ailing mother and his younger brother, Mark. His father, once a respectable man, fell into alcoholism and abandoned the family, leaving Rough to shoulder the responsibility of supporting them. Despite his tough circumstances, Rough maintains a positive attitude and a strong sense of morality.
