About The Author - Douglas William Freshfield (1845 –1934) was a British lawyer, mountaineer and author, who edited the Alpine Journal from 1872 to 1880. He was an active member of the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club and served as President of both organizations. Author who advocated the recognition of geography as an independent discipline in English universities Freshfield was secretary (1881–94) and president (1914–17) of the Royal Geographical Society and chairman of the Society of Authors (1908–09).
