Pain and loss are not only products of chaos, they produce chaos. Chaos moves one out of familiar patterns and known ways and causes one to re-evaluate what is important. In this text the author tells of his own spiritual journey and his own emotional chaos: the death of his father, the breakdown of his marriage and his bouts with debilitating depression. He shows how chaos such as this or chaos that simply whirls around inside, becomes sacred when it pushes one on the quest for spiritual intimacy. What the quest looks like, the text suggests, very much depends on how willing one is to let go of the past behaviours and how much one is willing to follow where the path of spiritual quest leads.
