The small cardamom, or green cardamom, is obtained from the seeds of the plant Elettaria cardamomum of the family Zingiberaceae. It is also called genuine cardamom and is locally known as 'elaichi'. Cardamom plantations are done commercially in South India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, and Central America. Due to the sweet aroma and flavoring versatility of cardamom, it is known to be the 'queen of spices and is used in many foods and beverages. It may have several applications as a traditional regional home remedy. It is one of the world's most expensive and highly prized spices available ranking third after saffron and vanilla.
