Samskara: A Rite for a Dead Man, published by Oxford University Press, is the English version of the novel originally written in Kannada, by U. R. Ananthamurthy. The translation is done by A. K. Ramanujan. This educational edition of Samskara explains why the novel is both a religious and contemporary poetic reworking of ancient Hindu myths and themes. The central event of the story is death, which evokes in its wake a plague, moral chaos and a rebirth. Depicting a decaying Brahmin colony in a village of South India, the novel was extremely popular with both general readers and critics.
