In Hinduism, the trident is extremely important. It is the main weapon of Mahadev, Lord Shiva, and is a three-pronged spear. His Trishul (Trident) is always seen in one hand when he is portrayed. The Sanskrit word Trishul is a mixture of two words, namely "Tri" (which means "three") and "Shul" or "Shool" (which means "a stake"). Goddess Durga, the spouse of Lord Shiva, is occasionally depicted wielding the trident as one of her weapons. She used it to defeat the powerful demon Mahishasura. Some Shaivites (followers of Lord Shiva) also carry a trident as a form of defense.
