This-textbook is meant to help the students and also teachers. The knowledge of basic sciences acquired by the present students admitted to the first year of B.D.S. course is taken as the base-line .. Care is taken to strike a balance between the basic sciences technologies and adequate orientation to the clinical applications. A slight different approach has been adopted as explained in the introduction to dentistry. This attempt has been made to develop a suitable standard textbook mainly for the B.D.S. students. Certain topics like materials used in orthodontia basic metallurgy ceramics etc. have been dealt with slightly greater details which may help the more intelligent Undergraduate Students and as an introduction to the Postgraduate students of the particular specialties. About the Author Professor V. SHAMA BHAT perhaps the senior most person still teaching dental materials is a postgraduate in Physics from Karnataka University Dharwaad.He was a lecturer in Physics (1957-1962) at St. Josephs College Bangalore; at Manipal institute of Technology (1962-1969); H.O.D of Physics; at Kasturba Medical College and College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1969-1976) Manipal. During this period he conducted (unpublished) research works on aquatic plants mathematical representations of plant leaves etc. and published a research article Some properties of reciprocals of prime integers in Journal of Mathematics Teacher in 1967. He accepted a challenging position of Professor and H.O.D. of Dental Materials at College of Dental Sciences of Manipal in 1976 and worked hard to establish and develop an independent department and status for this subject. B. T. NANDISH belongs to the first batch of the newly started M.Sc. (D.M.) course (1998) of Manipal Academy of Higher Education Manipal. After securing a first class in M.Sc. he joined this department and helped to develop the museum and took active part in all the activities of the department. He has already conducted some research work on Gypsum Products and introduced new exercise of determination of setting times of gypsum products for different parameters for BDS course.
