Searching for the Silver Lining is a memoir and a testament to the power of love. Yanet’s story begins in 1970’s Cuba, where tyrannical limitations and frustrations were quickly becoming a way of life. Dissatisfied, her parents left their beloved Cuba for a chance at a new life in the United States during the historic Mariel Boatlift in 1980.True to it’s title, one little girls curiosity and determination turns a would-be sad story into a tale of resilience and success against all odds. It is an account of a family battling the demons of poverty, drugs, domestic violence and crime during the 1980’s Cocaine Cowboy days in Miami, Florida. However, what begins as a sobering story of a family broken by the pain of separation through emigration turns into an homage to the United States and to the one person in her life who believed in its promise and in her. Yanet’s story is a testimony that, although a village for every child is ideal, all a child truly needs is one person to support and guide them in order to succeed and excel in the best country in the world!
