Here is another one of Ruskin Bond’s great collection of stories. The stories from Secrets take place in the author’s most loved place, Dehra Dun, during the late 1940’s. Along with his writings, the reader can enjoy the picturesque views and surroundings of Dehra as well in this book. Summary of the Book Rusty is thirteen and stays at a hotel called Greens at Dehradun. It was where his mother worked. With India becoming an independent nation, times were getting tough. A major part of all the stories is in regard to the events that started to unfold around the hotel. The book comprises of seven short stories. Over the Wall This is a touching tale about Mr. Johnson who has contracted leprosy. The story is a happy narrative that might remind readers of their mischievous childhood. The Canal Miss Gamla is an old woman who turns hostile towards the boys who bathe in the canal that is located near her house. Gracie This is a sentimental story of a young lady from Dehra who marries a British soldier and shifts to London. At Green’s Hotel A handsome, young Army Captain is made to look suspicious because of his fondness for late night movies. The Late Night Show This story is about a murder that has taken place at the late night movie show where Ruskin is also present. The Skeleton in the Cupboard A skeleton found in a cupboard has raised suspicion, and the story behind it is revealed. The Tiger in the Lounge This is a story filled with excitement and terror. All the stories are a delight to any fan of the author, and even those who want some light-hearted reading in their time of leisure. About Ruskin Bond Ruskin Bond is an Indian writer of British descent. He was recognized by The Indian Council for Child Education for his role in the growth of children’s literature in India. For this, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992 for his work Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1999, and again in 2014. Today, he lives with his adopted family in Landour, near Missourie.
