This 2 volume work, by the renowned Sanskritist H. H. Wilson, gives translations of many tracts of famous works of Hindu theater. The set starts with a lengthy introduction wherein the author gives notices on Hindu dramatic system, which includes : the authorities of the system; different kinds of dramatic expression; conduct of the plot; characters of the drama; diction, etc. The first volumes gives extracts in English from : Mrichchhakati, or the toy cart; Vikrama and Urvashi; and Uttara-Rama-Charitra. Volume two has : Malati and Madhava; Mudra-Rakshasa; and Ratnavali. This volume contains an appendix that gives short accounts of 23 dramas, which include : Mahavira Charitra, Agnimitra and Malavika, Hanuman Nataka, Sarada Tilaka, Yayati Charitra, Mrigankalekha, Abhirama Mani, Pradyumna Vijaya, Sri Dama Charitra, Hasyarnava, Chitra Yajna, etc. This set is a reprint of the 1871 edition.
