The Spectator, the joint venture of Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, achieved immense popularity in its own time, censoring as it did the morals and manners of the age. Beside, it marks a definite stage in the evolution of the English Novel. The essays are enjoyable for Addison’s refined style and irony as well as Steele’s spontaneity of expression and human warmth.
