About Rabindranath Tagore With his first name ‘Rabindranath’ translating to ‘Lord of the Sun’, Tagore’s personality and breadth of talented work definitely lived up to the authority that his name demanded. Born and brought up in Calcutta, Tagore hailed from a rich and prosperous family. Rabindranath Tagore has written quite a few novels, novellas, and short stories till date. These include, Chaturanga, Shesher Kobita, Char Odhay, Haimanti, Noukadubi, Ghare Baire, Gora, Joga-Jog, Nasthanir, Atithi, and Chokher Bali. Tagore also wrote, in three volumes, Galpaguchcha, which is a collection of 84 stories. As far as poetry goes, Gitanjali is his best work, which bagged him the Nobel Prize in 1913. Other notable works of poetry by Tagore include Manasi, Sonar Tori, Balaka, and Purobi. Tagore’s work is known for its honesty, simplicity, and deeply profound meanings and ideas. His writing is deep, philosophical, rich in imagery, and intellectual. His poetry, in particular, is lyrical and very insightful. Tagore was born in the year 1861, to Sarada Devi and Debendranath Tagore. He was an influential figure who shaped Bengali literature and music. Gitanjali won him the Nobel Prize in 1913 and truly immortalised him as the literary master of the Indian nation. An eminent musician and singer, Tagore wrote a huge collection of songs that came to be known as Rabindra Sangeet. These songs form an important part of Bengali culture. He also took up drawing and painting in his later life and many of his works made it all the way to Paris. Sukantha Chaudhuri is currently a professor of English at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Sankha Ghosh was a professor of Bengali at the same university.
