Shades of Grey 1: The Road to High Saffron is the first title in the Shades of Grey series written by Jasper Fforde. Summary of the Book This novel depicts a future dystopian society called Chromatacia, an alternate version of the UK. Hundreds of years somewhere in the future, after the “something” that happened, the world is a distressingly different place. People live according to the rules laid down, and the social hierarchy is determined based on the individual’s perception of colour. Eddie Russett, the protagonist, is an above average Red who dreams of moving up the ladder by wedding Constance Oxblood. He is sent to the Outer Fringes where he meets Jane, a lowly Grey with a foul temper and a desire to see him dead. But for Eddie, it is love at first sight. But his passion will eventually make him realise that there is more than what meets the eye. He discovers that in the world where everything seems black and white, there are but only shades of grey. About Jasper Fforde Jasper Fforde is a British writer, best known for his Thursday Next novels. His debut novel is titled The Eyre Affair. He has compiled the series Nursery Crime Division and The Dragonslayer. Early Riser is his other standalone novel.
