Born in 1823, Gibbs worked his way from humble beginnings to become a prominent activist and advocate for civil rights.The autobiography covers Gibbs’s early years in Philadelphia, his involvement in the abolitionist movement, and his participation in California's Gold Rush, where he founded a successful business. Later, he recounts his time in British Columbia, where he became a leader in the Black community and helped establish educational and social institutions. Gibbs ultimately returned to the United States, where he served as the first Black judge in Arkansas and played a key role in post-Civil War Reconstruction efforts.
