The present book is a detailed first of its kind study of the Sherpas inhabiting Darjeeling District of West Bengal and South District of Sikkim. This ethnographic study among the Sherpas of these two areas was undertaken by the authors because firstly the Sherpas here have very interesting culture and secondly these people here are very little known. All detailed studies so far published are on the Sherpas of Nepal. So, people know about the Sherpas of Nepal but not about them living in Darjeeling and Sikkim. From this detailed study the readers of this book, particularly those who are interested about the people of the Himalayas and of North-East India, will get a comprehensive idea about the life and activities of these inhabitants of the Himalayas. Moreover, in this book a comparison between their society and culture and those of their congeners in Nepal has also been made. As a result the readers will get a complete life sketch of these people from this book. This book will also help in formulating and undertaking development programmes among them and also in the areas they live.
