It usually has a collar, sleeves, a front opening, and a tail long enough to be tucked inside pants or a skirt. The oldest preserved shirt, made of linen, dates back to 3000 BCE in Egypt. Until the nineteenth century, shirts were primarily worn by men, and women wore chemises, a type of undershirt, underneath dresses. From 1860 onward, European and American women began wearing shirts.
