Silent Spring is an environmental science book authored by bestselling author and environmentalist, Rachel Carson. Summary of the Book Silent Spring provides the readers an incisive look into the detrimental effects of the indiscriminate use of pesticides on the environment. It was one of the most influential books of the twentieth century and stayed on the bestseller list for thirty-one months. The book exposed the ruthless destruction of wildlife, especially birds, through the widespread and uncontrolled use of synthetic pesticides. She also accuses the chemical industry of spreading wrong information and public officials of accepting industry claims unquestioningly. Despite severe opposition from the press and the attempts by several chemical companies to ban the book, the author was instrumental in creating public awareness of the damage caused to the environment. It led to a reversal in national pesticide policy, and a nationwide ban on DDT for agricultural uses, and inspired an environmental movement, which led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. About Rachel Carson Rachel Louise Carson was an American marine biologist, conservationist and author. She is best known for Silent Spring and other writings which led to the advancement of the global environmental movement. She started her career as an aquatic biologist in the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. She has authored several books including Under the Sea Wind, The Sea Around Us, and The Sense of Wonder.
