This book will influence readers to pay attention to the small things that help get better results and make both the administration and the system more caring, credible, robust, efficient and outcome-oriented. As IAS officers, and as public servants, we owe this to the people of India whom we must serve better. The devastating second surge of the covid pandemic has almost brought India to its knees amidst possibly its worst health and humanitarian crisis since independence. Nothing better illustrates the importance of the small things that matter as is evident in the various acts of omission and commission that we have been witness to over the year, as certainly will be recorded when the history of the pandemic is written. We must learn our lessons, at great cost, and fix our governance systems. Otherwise, we will simply not be able to meet the emerging serious challenges of our time. It also shows that we need focused action leading to actual outcomes. Small as they might appear, they are crucial for our future development. That is the real message of this book.
