Social Action Litigation is a relatively new concept in the legal profession and its possibilities are legion. Part one of this volume entitled “Themes and General Issues”, discusses the poverty culture and its implications. It goes on to survey the functional growth of social work from charity to problem solving and helps in understanding social action as a method for achieving social justice. A national strategy for socio legal action and the innovative uses of Social Action Litigation (S A L) are also outlined. The second part deals with the vital issues and problems of public interest litigation—the focus, choice of relief methods, the means and the alternative administrative strategy for litigation. Specific areas like dowry, prison, tribal welfare and slum dwellers are discussed at length in individual articles by specialists.
